Rinse your mouth gently with warm water. A cold compress on the cheek can ease swelling. Avoid chewing on that side.<\/p><\/li><li><h3>Toothache<\/h3><p>Rinse with warm water and floss gently to remove trapped food. Do not hold a tablet against the gum. If you take a pain reliever, follow the label or a pharmacist's advice, and tell us what you took. A pain reliever does not treat the cause, so the tooth still needs to be checked.<\/p><\/li><li><h3>Swollen gum or face<\/h3><p>Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek for 15\u201320 minutes at a time. Do not use heat. If the swelling spreads, or you have a fever or trouble swallowing, see the hospital warning signs below.<\/p><\/li><li><h3>Crown or filling came out<\/h3><p>Keep the crown in a small container and bring it with you. Do not glue it back yourself. Avoid chewing on that side until you are seen.<\/p><\/li><li><h3>Knocked-out adult tooth<\/h3><p>Pick the tooth up by the crown (the part you normally see), not the root. If it is dirty, rinse it briefly under cold running water without scrubbing. If you can, put it gently back in its socket and bite on a clean cloth to hold it; if not, keep it in milk. Do not let it dry out, and contact us straight away, because time matters. Do not put a baby tooth back.<\/p><\/li><li><h3>Bleeding after an extraction<\/h3><p>Place clean gauze over the area and bite down firmly to keep pressure on it. Some oozing in the first 24\u201348 hours is common.
