Patient Instruction Teeth Whitening
1. General information
Teeth whitening is a process that changes yellowed or discolored teeth back to a bright, white shade. This is achieved by using a whitening agent, such as hydrogen peroxide, found in teeth whitening products. The agent reacts with the enamel or dentin to break down stains, making the teeth appear whiter. Teeth whitening is ideal for patients with yellow or discolored teeth caused by surface stains or their natural tooth color.
2. Purpose of the Procedure/Treatment
- Whiten teeth to a brighter shade
- Make every smile more confident
3. Risk and side effect of treatment
- Teeth whitening is safe and does not damage the tooth structure or weaken the enamel. However, you may experience tooth sensitivity during and after the procedure, which typically resolves within 1 to 2 days.
- Gums and oral tissues may feel a burning or dry sensation, particularly from the use of lip-retracting devices, which may cause some tightness or irritation.
4. Alternatives treatment

5. Pre / Post Care
Pre-Whitening Care Instructions
- It is recommended to have a professional cleaning and polishing before undergoing teeth whitening.
- Any necessary dental work, such as fillings for cavities or treatment for worn tooth surfaces, should be completed prior to whitening.
- Some patients may be advised to use a toothpaste designed to reduce tooth sensitivity.
6. During the Teeth Whitening Procedure
- A dentist assistant will periodically check in to ask about any tooth sensitivity or other unusual symptoms you may experience.
- If you experience any discomfort or abnormal symptoms during the whitening process, you can immediately alert the dental assistant by raising your left hand under the cover as a signal.
- Once the whitening procedure is completed, the dentist will apply a desensitising agent to alleviate any sensitivity for every case.
7. Post-Teeth Whitening Care
- Avoid colored foods and beverages, such as soda, tea, coffee, and spicy foods, for 1–2 weeks after whitening.
- Refrain from smoking for 1–2 weeks following the procedure.
- To prevent the teeth from darkening again, brush your teeth or rinse your mouth after consuming tea, coffee, or strongly flavored foods.
- Follow the dentist’s instructions diligently.
