Patient Instruction Fixed Orthodontic Treatment-Braces

1. General information

Fixed orthodontic appliances are used to correct misaligned bites, improve dental health, and align teeth aesthetically. These appliances consist of brackets attached to the teeth (which may be metal or ceramic) and archwires that move the teeth into the desired position. Patients need to visit the dentist regularly to adjust the braces and change the elastics.

Duration of Orthodontic Treatment: Fixed braces (Metal Braces) typically require about 2 years or more. The exact duration depends on each individual’s dental health and tooth structure. The orthodontist will develop a treatment plan in collaboration with the patient. Regular dental visits and strict adherence to the orthodontist’s recommendations are crucial for achieving the desired results efficiently and in line with the treatment plan.

2. Purpose of the procedure/treatment

  • To address the issue of improper bite alignment, ensuring food is chewed thoroughly.
  • To resolve problems caused by overcrowded teeth, leading to bite issues.
  • To enhance facial aesthetics in cases of protruding chin or upper teeth.
  • To boost confidence and improve appearance, allowing for a full and radiant smile.

3. Advantages of Procedure/Treatment

  • Can correct and address all types of dental issues, including protruding teeth, crowded teeth, gaps, crossbite, underbite, deep bite, open bite, and misaligned teeth.

4. Risks and Side Effects

  • In the initial stage, the cheek and lip areas may experience irritation or mouth sores, which typically take about 1 to 4 weeks to adjust. After this period, the irritation usually decreases and returns to normal. Patients can use the wax provided by the dentist to cover sharp areas of the braces that cause irritation. Drinking plenty of water will also help heal sores faster.
  • There may be pain due to the tension from the rubber bands; if the pain is severe, pain relievers should be taken.

5. Alternatives

  • Clear removable aligners, such as Invisalign and Spark

6. Potential consequences of not undergoing the procedure/treatment

  • Falling Teeth
  • Midline shift
  • Irregular bite
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Crowded teeth

7. Pre/Post care

  • Maintain oral hygiene by brushing your teeth after every meal and before bed to prevent tooth decay or gum disease.
  • Follow the dentist’s instructions meticulously, such as wearing rubber bands, retainers, and attending scheduled appointments.
  • During the initial phase of braces, sores may develop in the mouth. These symptoms will gradually subside within 5-10 days. To reduce irritation, apply the wax provided by the dentist over sharp areas, and drink plenty of water to speed up healing. If pain persists, take painkiller medication.
  • Handle your braces with care to avoid breakage, bending, or any damage. If issues arise, such as loose braces, irritating wires, or severe pain, consult your dentist immediately.
  • Cut or divide food into bite-sized pieces to minimize impact on the braces and chew with your back molars.
  • Avoid chewing sticky, hard, and crunchy foods like ice, brittle nuts, and dried squid.
  • Refrain from habits such as nail-biting, thumb-sucking, and chewing on pencils or other hard objects to prevent misalignment.
  • Avoid playing wind instruments.
  • When first fitted with braces or after each orthodontic adjustment, you may experience tightness or tooth pain, which will improve in about a week.
